My first ‘job’ as a photographer was, in 1978, to photograph Roald Dahl for a school magazine. I had written to him to request a sitting. He wrote back, saying yes, picked me up from his local station in the Chilterns, cooked me scrambled eggs for lunch and then we had a very quick photo session. I didn’t really know what I was doing, which made him more solicitous than he might have been otherwise. He wrote to me afterwards saying that he liked my pictures of him more than any others and sent it to Vogue for publication.
